In 2011, Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation (then known as Shanduka Foundation) and Kagiso Trust started a conversation on how they might work together to achieve a greater impact on education transformation. The aim was to develop a project that leveraged the methodologies and best practices of each organisation. The result was an integrated whole school development model, addressing infrastructure development, curriculum support, social welfare and leadership, which could be implemented at a district level.

In March 2013, Kagiso Shanduka Trust (KST) together with the Free State Department of Education embarked on a project to support educational transformation in 428 schools in the Fezile Dabi and Motheo Districts.

By 2018 the project aims to be working in all schools in Fezile Dabi and selected schools in Botshabelo, Thaba N’chu, Naledi and Manstopa municipalities in Motheo.

“Everything will be done in the interest of the children.”

Tate Makgoe, Free State MEC for Education

“All the people that are working here are members of the community; I think Kagiso Shanduka Trust has brought hope to our community. The school is much safer now and they are building more classrooms to reduce overcrowding. Our whole community will benefit, just as our school is benefiting.”

Nthabiseng Selemela, Foundation Phase Educator, Meduwaneng Primary

The partnership between KST and the Free State Department of Education is unique for a number of reasons. Trust, shared vision and vast experience is being utilised for the benefit of future education into the country. Kagiso Shanduka Trust has been welcomed into the strategic planning and decision‐making spaces within the Free State Department of Education. All entities are committed to transparent processes and focus on the relative strengths of each organisation, rather than the gaps.

“Both entities were looking at collaboration. We both had the experience but could not have as much impact on our own. So we found each other on the path. I always talk about it as a courtship: we dated for a while, we liked each other a lot, we attempted an engagement, and liked each other more, and then we got married and formed the Kagiso Shanduka Trust. I think we are going to see great things come from this partnership in the future. “

Donné Nicol, CEO, Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation

This project is about collaboration and harnessing the resources of several partners to achieve a meaningful and lasting impact on the whole education system.

Kagiso Shanduka Trust is looking for partners who can add their resources, skills and expertise to further enhance the effectiveness of the project.
